MEET LUCKY!
This 6 week old purebred male Pug is in desperate need of surgery. I received a phone call from my vet's office asking
me if I would be willing to take in this baby Pug. A lady brought him in to the vet's office and she cannot afford a very
expensive surgery he requires for his ruptured eye. The surgery will require that the eye be removed and it needs to be
performed immediately due to the risk of infection. If the pup does not have the surgery, he will die. We are this little guy's
last hope so I agreed to take him in. After the surgery, he will be coming to my clinic for recovery and then will be available
for adoption. The vet is also uncertain of the vision in his remaining eye so this will be reevaluated once he has a chance
to recover a bit. Obviously this little fella is a special needs case so needs an extra special home for his disability. We
are asking for donations to help with his expensive eye surgery. Thanks very much!! WARNING: PICS ARE GRAPHIC.
UPDATE10/13: I got a phone call at 8:30 a.m. informing me that Lucky could not have his eye surgery this morning
because infection has set in. The vet is afraid that if the eye is removed with the orbit so severely infected, that the
infection will then spread to the bloodstream and then Lucky would have a worse problem at that point. So I am going to
go pick him up and bring him back to my clinic for a few days of eye medication and antibiotics. Then once he has got
some antibiotics in his system, they will remove the eye. Hopefully he can make it until Tuesday morning. If the eye
completely ruptures, then he will have to have emergency surgery. This little fella really needs some prayers right now. I'll
post some new pics later this evening.
UPDATE 10/13 EVENING: Just got home from the vet. Surgery is re-scheduled for Tuesday morning. Right now he is
getting medicated eye drops in both eyes and is on Clavamox to fight the infection in order to keep it from spreading and
make surgery safer. We are trying very hard to save his 'good' eye but only time will tell. Lucky only weighs 1.7 lbs. I
dewormed him and fed him a high calorie prescription canned food and he was so hungry and he ate so fast that he had
food all over his protruding eye. Got him cleaned up and remedicated and he is much happier now. He has a full tummy
and is sleeping peacefully.
UPDATE 10/16: Lucky is still hanging in there. The medicine doesn't seem to be changing the status of his better eye
but I haven't given up hope yet. The bad eye doesn't seem to be protruding as much but I think it is because the dead
scabbed up part on the end has fallen off which just makes it seem smaller. It is oozing a little bit. He just needs to make it
until Tuesday morning. HOWEVER, on a good note, he has gained 4 oz. in just three days and now weighs 1.11 lbs which
is awesome!! I made my own special concoction in the blender which is packed with Probios, vitamins, rice baby cereal,
beef broth, high calorie prescription food as well as low residue prescription food to prevent any diarrhea from the mix and
he LOVES it. He is eating like a little piggy and doing great in that respect so I'm very pleased about that. At least it is
something positive. (See new photo below.)
UPDATE 10/17: I dropped Lucky off at the vet's about 9 p.m. for surgery tomorrow morning. I am keeping my fingers
crossed all turns out well. I now believe he is blind in his better eye so I will be anxiously awaiting that phone call tomorrow
to see if she removed one or both eyes. He did gain 6 ounces during his 4 days at my clinic and his bad eye looked much
better so I know she will be pleased about that. I do believe he is much more stable to handle surgery tomorrow. The
techs all thought he looked 100% better than when he left so I am hopeful all will go well tomorrow. Please keep him in
your thoughts tomorrow morning.
UPDATE 10/18: Lucky is home from surgery! He did great, vet was very pleased with his weight gain, and the orbital
infection was not an issue during surgery. He will now recuperate and continue on his antibiotics as well as the antibiotic
eye ointment. Unfortunately though the vet does not feel he has any vision in his better eye so it looks as though he is in
fact blind. As soon as he has fully recovered, he will be available for adoption and his adoption fee will be waived. See
his new pics below. He is still a little sleep from the anesthesia but he ate his dinner and went back to sleep. :)
UPDATE 10/22: Lucky is recovering nicely. He now weighs 2 lbs! See his video below.
UPDATE 10/23: Lucky's weight today is 2.3. He is gaining weight in leaps and bounds! He is finally well enough to be
vaccinated today as well. He has such a wonderful, loving personality and obviously a fabulous appetite. Lucky now has a
home to go to once he is well enough to leave. Thank you Kaylee for opening your heart to this special needs fella.

I want to send a huge THANK YOU to everyone who donated towards Lucky's surgery!! Everyone's donation was
GREATLY APPRECIATED and I want to send an extra special thank you to Linda, Pam, Serena, Barb, Cathi and
Carolyn. You guys are awesome and I just can't thank you enough for your support. Lucky's surgery has been paid for in
full and I have removed the donation button. THANK YOU EVERYONE!! I am so grateful that this little fella has been
given a second chance thanks to ALL of you.

UPDATE 10/25: Lucky continues to do great and gain weight. Today his weight is 2.7 lbs. His post-op check up is
scheduled for Nov. 2nd and if all is well, he will go to his forever home on Nov. 6th. He just turned 8 weeks old and is finally
well enough to be vaccinated.
UPDATE 11/2: Weight 3 lbs!! Vet check tonight revealed some good news and some okay news. First the good news.
We think that he can see, at least shadows if nothing else, as he actually tracked my finger very well in the exam room.
Since the room was brightly lit, he at least could see shadows and hopefully actually had some vision in his remaining eye,
so there is hope that he's got some vision. However, on fluorescein staining of the eye there is still some stuff on the eye
so it is very important that we continue the antibiotic ointment 4-5 times a day in an effort to reduce any scarring. This
needs to continue for 2 weeks and then she wants to restain the eye again and see what's happening. He may need a
round of prednisone (steroid) eye drops to try to reduce the scarring but we'll just have to wait and see. She said that
otherwise he is very healthy. Lots of pics and a video below of his adventure at the vet's. :)

UPDATE - TUESDAY, 10/18 AFTER SURGERY

UPDATE - WEDNESDAY, 11/2 Looking like a healthy Pug now!
|
He was quite fiesty on the way to the vet's. :)
|
This is Dr. Jacobson, the awesome vet who saved his life. He was very grateful. :)
|
(As you can see above, my daughter just loves him and likes being silly with him.)
Lucky had a big adventure at the vet's office and he got to visit all of the techs who helped save his life and get him into our rescue. Everyone in the waiting room had to visit with him as well which he thoroughly enjoyed. He is quite spoiled and thinks everything is all about him. :) As you can see below, he was all tuckered out for the ride home.
|
I was saying "Hey" to him in a high pitched voice. He absolutely loves that! LOL It was so funny watching him react to it.
