MEET RENO!

Reno is a 9 week old purebred Boston Terrier that came in with a group of pups rescued from a puppymill.  Unfortunately
this little fella suffered a
SEVERE rectal prolapse on Friday, Nov. 5th and required emergency surgery.  Thanks to our
TOTALLY AWESOME VET DR LINDSEY, Reno has made it through surgery, however, we will have to wait about a
week to see if the colon tissue is healthy.  Dr. Lindsey had to go in through his abdomen and carefully pull the prolapse
back in after treatment to reduce the swelling.  The vet tech told me that it took about 45 minutes to get it to go back
inside and they almost gave up when they decided to try one last time and thankfully it went in!  Then she tacked the colon
to his abdominal wall in an effort to prevent it from re-prolapsing.  Reno remains in ICU tonight.  A couple of years ago we
had this happen to another pup whose name was Vegas so Dr. Lindsey named this little guy Reno because like Vegas,
his wee life is a gamble too.  If the surgery outcome is good, Reno will have terrible bloody diarrhea at which time he will
slough the damaged intestinal lining and he will be on medication and antibiotics until he has fully recovered.  If the
outcome is poor, then the colon tissue will die and the tacking will break loose allowing the rectum to re-prolapse.  I
believe if the colon tissue dies, then fecal matter will be released into the blood stream and this little guy will pass away.
But he is in incredibly good hands right now at the vet's office and receiving the very best of care.

This is Vegas' website who had the same procedure done:

UPDATE:  11/6/10:  Reno is back home tonight and resting comfortably.  Now we wait.

UPDATE:  11/8/10:  Still doing well, starting to eat, acting normal. The gross diarrhea has not started yet.

UPDATE:  11/14/10:  Reno is still doing great.  The diarrhea and sloughing has not started and in talking with Dr.
Lindsey, she thinks that he may not have it at all.  She thinks that Vegas may have had it so badly because she actually
had two prolapse thus causing more  intestinal damage, but Reno has been great, acting and eating normally, and is his
usual happy self.  She said to give him one more week and then he can be adopted.

UPDATE:  11/20/10:  Reno continues to do great so he is going to his new home on November 26!
