MEET CHYNA!
Those of you who know me know that I have a huge soft spot for rottweilers and I just pulled this girl from the pound
who is in DESPERATE need. I know her medical bills are going to be staggering but this dog was going to be
euthanized and I just couldn't bear the thought. She is an adult female who was picked up as a stray on August 5th.
She did have a 2009 license but the owner information was not current so odds are this poor dog ended up a victim
of foreclosure or eviction and was left behind. When I spoke to the lady at the pound, she told me that she was literally
near death and didn't even have the strength to stand up. She also said that she had gained a little bit of weight while
at the pound though her pictures are still shocking so I cannot imagine her weighing even less than when I got her.
She was listed as a "rescue only" meaning that she could only be pulled from the pound by a rescue. The pound is so
overwhelmed with dogs that they were forced to do the first round of euthanasia but Chyna was spared in the hopes
that she would be pulled - but no rescue would take her in. She would have been put down in the next round.
Starvation aside, this dog has multiple problems. As you can see in her photos, she is covered with lumps and has a
golf ball sized tumor on her right neck and a smaller one on her left flank. If you watch my site then you understand
when I say she is a severe combination of Voodoo and Viper. Despite all of this, Chyna is a happy, friendly dog and
her grateful nub is always wiggling.
There are so many issues to address that it is just a matter of addressing each issue one at a time but first we have to
get her strength up so that she can endure treatment. Right now she cannot even be vaccinated due to her poor
health and she came from the pound with kennel cough. I've got her on Doxycycline in an attempt to keep the kennel
cough from turning into pneumonia given her weakened condition. She also has an infection of the eyes so I've also
got her on antibiotic eye drops. She is currently in quarantine for 14 days while we work on those health issues and
try to get her weight up and then once she is stronger, we will start working on the lumps which are most likely
cancerous just like Viper's was. (Viper by the way got adopted and is happy in her new home. :) Chyna has hair loss
and the hair she has is very coarse and dry and her skin is a mess. She is also flea infested and dehydrated and will
need to be spayed.
UPDATE: Chyna's treatment plan for the moment consists of Doxycycline for the kennel cough, BNP antibiotic eye
drops for the eye infection, a 7 day course of Panacur to deworm her and cover her for giardia, Frontline for the flea
infestation, liquid Omega 3 for her skin and coat, and ear mite treatment, as well as a high quality diet for weight gain.
That's about all she can tolerate at the moment. Once we get her strength up, she will be heartworm tested,
vaccinated, spayed, and have extensive surgery for all of her lumps and tumors. Once we know she is heartworm
negative, we will place her on Revolution which will also take care of any remaining mites and any possible mange.
Please pray for this dog. She really needs all the help she can get. And also please pray that they track down the
individuals who did this to her and that they are held accountable. This is just unforgivable.
PLEASE, if anyone can spare even just a little to help with her medical expenses, it would be GREATLY appreciated.
I will keep posting updates on her and hopefully we can get this girl healthy and ultimately in a forever, loving home.
THANK YOU!
UPDATE 9/17/10: I have been waiting to post this update in the hopes that I would have better news but unfortunately
despite my best efforts, Chyna's kennel cough turned into pneumonia. Her progress has been painfully slow. She is
gaining weight but again, very slowly, and having pneumonia certainly isn't helping. She is on different antibiotics but
is still too ill to vaccinate. Hopefully once we get her over the pneumonia we can vaccinate her and start working
towards all of the tumor removals. I hope the next update will be a happier one.
UPDATE 9/26/10: Chyna is doing much better now as you can see in her updated photos below. She has gained
weight, is now over her pneumonia, and was finally well enough to be vaccinated today! Hopefully we can now start
addressing her numerous tumors.
UPDATE: 11/4/10: This update is long over due and I apologize but this has been a very lengthy process for Chyna.
As you know, she finally recovered from her emaciated condition as well as pneumonia and was able to be
vaccinated. Then came the task of dealing with all of the tumors. While at the vet's, I got a call from the staff stating
that Chyna was trying to "attack" everyone and that no one could handle her therefore they wanted to euthanize her as
she was not considered to be adoptable. This was surprising to me because Chyna had not acted like that while
here with me so I assumed she must have been scared and confused. This dog has had a long road to recovery and
she has come too far for me to give up on her now. I refused to let them put her down so they continued with surgery
at which time she was spayed and had 3 of the largest tumors removed. She looks a bit like Frankenstein at the
moment but she is doing well and weighed in at 83 lbs (she has gained 30 lbs since arrival). In light of all of this, I
have decided to let Chyna stay here with me at what seems to be becoming a "rottweiler sanctuary". LOL She is
happy here and I have no behavioral problems with Chyna so we are happy to let her live out her life here with our
family. She gets along great with Voodoo and all of the other dogs so I guess she just wanted to come home. :)
Updated photos are below.
